Bone Grafting Course in Implant Dentistry

Outcome-based Learning

By the end of this course, participants will be equipped with the clinical and decision-making skills needed to carry out advanced bone grafting procedures with confidence. Delegates will leave with a deep understanding of guided bone regeneration and autogenous grafting, hands-on experience with augmentation techniques, and the ability to integrate digital tools to achieve predictable outcomes in complex implant cases.

Aims & Objectives

Master the practical application of guided bone regeneration and autogenous grafting techniques, including intraoral bone harvesting, membrane selection, fixation methods, and flap management for achieving primary closure. The course integrates digital planning tools such as CBCT and surgical guides to enhance precision and predictability in bone augmentation procedures. Participants will perform key techniques on specialised models and gain hands-on proficiency in bone augmentation workflows for implant dentistry.

Course Aims:

  1. Develop a comprehensive understanding of the biological principles and clinical indications of guided bone regeneration (GBR) and autogenous bone grafting techniques.

  2. Gain hands-on experience with the surgical protocols for horizontal and vertical bone augmentation, including flap design, membrane handling, graft harvesting, and stabilisation.

  3. Enhance clinical decision-making skills for selecting GBR and/or autogenous bone augmentation techniques in complex implant cases to achieve predictable functional and aesthetic outcomes.

  4. Master techniques for harvesting autogenous bone from intraoral donor sites, including the external oblique ridge and symphysis.

  5. Understand the timing and integration of implant placement following GBR and autogenous bone grafting, including staged and simultaneous approaches.

  6. Integrate digital planning tools (e.g., CBCT, surgical guides) to enhance precision and predictability in bone augmentation procedures.

  7. Refine suturing and soft tissue management techniques to ensure primary closure and optimise healing.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify appropriate indications and case selection criteria for guided bone regeneration and autogenous bone augmentation.

  2. Be able to choose the appropriate combination of biomaterials to carry out successful guided bone regeneration procedures.

  3. Describe the biological principles of bone healing and regeneration relevant to GBR and autogenous grafting.

  4. Understand the most common complications associated with bone augmentation procedures and how to manage them.

  5. Select and apply fixation techniques such as tenting screws, pins, and titanium meshes to stabilise grafts.

  6. Explain the properties and selection criteria for membranes (resorbable and non-resorbable) and graft materials (autogenous, allografts, xenografts, and synthetics).

  7. Demonstrate proper flap design, periosteal releasing incisions, and soft tissue management to achieve primary closure.

Mukesh, Sam and Azhar have known each other for over thirty years. During this time, they have been firm friends, professional colleagues, practice partners and now partners at Practical Implantology.

Although very different individuals, they share the same core values that underpin their personal and professional approach to dentistry and specifically implantology.

Jointly, they have over sixty five years of dental experience and between them have placed over 15,000 dental implants. They have experience in a wide range of implant procedures including bone manipulation and grafting, single and multiple/full arch cases.

Mukesh, Sam and Azhar have experience and training in mentoring and are ADI mentors. They have been vocational training (VT) trainers and coached countless colleagues over the years.

They, themselves have participated in lifelong learning and have been fortunate to have been trained by some of the giants of the implant field notably Professor Hilt Tatum from whom they have also absorbed and assimilated the ethics of patient interaction that underpins their approach to dentistry to this very day.

They are passionate in sharing what they have learned over their professional lives. Mukesh often talks about empowerment of the dentist. This includes sharing of all knowledge in an open, accessible, honest, unbiased and practical way that allows a dentist to expand on their skills.

“This course ensures that dentists build skills, experience and confidence in a safe structured way that allows them to introduce learned knowledge and techniques into their practice in a reproducible and predictable way for the benefit of their patients and enrichment of their professional lives”.

To compliment the learning Mukesh, Sam and Azhar are happy to provide ongoing support and mentoring for anyone that wishes. They hope to create a win-for-all situation.

As Mukesh says “together we are stronger“.
